Welcome to Discovery! September 2017

During these first, introductory week(s) of Discovery, we have introduced ourselves, learned what science is (learning about the world around us), discussed some of the fascinating topics scientists study, and best of all, explored all around the Discovery room!  The hands-on centers involved:  magnets; building structures (and shapes); weight/balance; woodland animals; rock exploration; marine habitat exploration; insects; and x-ray discovery.  It was a fun, exciting start of our year together!

Each week I will introduce one or two new words related to our topic of discuss and we will try to use those words throughout the week and all year long so that we can truly understand their meaning and use.  Sometimes I refer to these "Words of the Week" as our, "WOWs"!

1st Week WOWs:  OBSERVE and OBSERVATION
2nd Week WOWs:  SCIENCE and SCIENTIST

The children learned they each are scientists when they walk in the Discovery room and there are SO MANY areas of science for them to learn about and discover.

Our smallest scientists LOVED the beach station!  They investigated sand crabs, sea turtles, seashells, seaweed, hermit crabs, starfish, and many other interesting marine creatures.

Note:  If you have any problem with your child's photograph being on this blog (only for Saint Andrews families), please let me know and I can take down the image.  I wanted to get most of the children photographed this first week, who are allowed to be photographed so you could see them in action in my classroom! :) In coming weeks, I may not get as many photos but hope to get your child throughout the year so you can see them discovering and exploring.

Thank you for sharing your children with us!  We are going to have a wonderful year!
